Welcome to the re-creation of my former blog (steelheadvoices.com) as bcsteelheadvoices.com. This new platform continues the mission of sharing perspectives and information about British Columbia’s wild steelhead, building on the foundation established by its predecessor.
Setting the Stage
To begin this renewed journey, I want to highlight a quote from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s historic address at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on January 20, 2026.
“Nostalgia is not a strategy.”
Relevance to British Columbia’s Wild Steelhead
That remark applies perfectly to the status of British Columbia’s wild steelhead. It serves as a reminder that looking back fondly is not enough; proactive, forward-thinking approaches are required to address the challenges facing these iconic fish. That said, we need at least some baseline from which to judge progress. The first blog entry in that context is a piece prepared two years ago. Another year has elapsed; there is insufficient time to make any judgment. Be vigilant with respect to that 2024 synopsis, though. It shouldn’t take very many future seasons to gauge our success in sustaining the best remaining wild steelhead stocks in the Skeena watershed and beyond.
